Hello and welcome to the Journalism program at Holland College in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. We’ve been around for more than 30 years, training print journalists who now work in newspapers across Canada (visit our Alumni Profiles section ) Some have used the training to move into related careers. And a growing number of graduates are choosing to turn their college diploma into an applied degree by completing two more years of instruction at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Our class includes about 35 students drawn mostly from Atlantic Canada but with a representation from Ontario, Quebec and western Canada. Their backgrounds are
varied, ranging from recent high school graduates to twenty-somethings adding practical experience to a university degree, to people who have been in the workforce
for many years and are looking for a second career.
Our two program instructors are both former newspaper reporters and editors. The training is hands-on, everything from interviewing, coming up with story ideas, photography, editing, and electronic layout (pagination). You won’t
find any three-hour lectures here; you’ll talk about and read about it – then you’ll do it. And you’ll get plenty of feedback and opportunity to try it again until you’ve mastered each individual skill you’ll need to excel in this field. Find examples of our students work in the showcase section.
These are the signature pieces conceived, researched, written, photographed, and paginated by our graduating
students.
We hope you’ll consider our program as an entry point into the exciting and challenging profession of print journalism. |
